Who we are

About OASIS

A UFRJ outreach project dedicated to investigating, monitoring and promoting the responsible, inclusive and ethical use of algorithmic technologies.

An interdisciplinary observatory

The Observatory of Algorithms and Information Systems with Social Impact (OASIS) was created at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2024. Our starting point is simple: algorithmic technologies are not neutral. They influence opportunities, rights, work, education, health, security and democratic life itself.

OASIS brings together students, researchers, faculty and professionals from different fields to examine these effects critically and constructively. We combine literature reviews, data analysis, public policy monitoring and dialogue with communities and institutions.

Our mission

To produce and share knowledge that helps society understand how algorithms and information systems work, who is affected by them and which choices can guide fairer technological development.

How we work

  • monitoring algorithmic systems and regulatory debates;
  • studies and reports written in accessible language;
  • workshops, seminars and educational activities;
  • recommendations for public policy and responsible practices;
  • networks connecting the university, civil society, public authorities and technology professionals.

By integrating teaching, research and community outreach, we seek to turn evidence into public participation and contribute to technologies committed to fundamental rights.
